What are six things one needs to consider to determine who is the best baseball player?
I know absolutely nothing about baseball so please help me!!
Thanks a lot for your help!
The best player is the one who plays best. How to determine is hard cause there are different positions and batting orders. I go by first how doe’s he field his position if he has great range which means he can cover a lot of ground get to balls hit in his area and be able to make plays on them then make sure he doe’s not make errors , his throwing arm for an infielder like a shortstop has to be able to throw to first base good or an out fielder has to throw to home plate or 2nd or 3rd base good , a catcher has to be able to throw base runners out like to 2nd base real good. Then after that how do they hit the ball do they make contact or strike out, do they have a batting average above .300 , do they make clutch hits, do they hit rbi’s and or home runs. Then you have pitchers which you have to look at there era if under 3.00 is good do they strike out a lot of hitters and keep runners off base. So it is hard to pick one player as best player cause of different positions and field positions that bat all the time are different from pitchers which don’t play every day and in the american league don’t hit so you must also consider d.h.’s. good luck .

Any knowledgeable baseball fan will tell you that the big league baseball teams never use brand new baseballs in a game. They’re too shiny to play with. So, what do umpires use to prep the balls and dull the shine? Please be as specific as possible.
MLB’s official game ball preparation calls for umpires to rub the balls with a rubbing mud, which is smooth and creamy, but with a fine grit. The composition of the mud is a closely held secret, but the base ingredient is known to be mud from a specific site in a tributary of the Delaware River.
It is also known as "Mississippi Mud".
Nowadays, it’s usually the bat boys or a clubhouse person who rubs the baseballs with the mud – overseen by an umpire.

What if, for whatever reason, Bud Selig put a salary cap on baseball next year? Do you think that it would dramatically change baseball? I hear all the time about how baseball needs a salary cap, so if it finally was put in place, what do you think would happen?
It depends on what the salary cap was set at. If it was set at 150,000,000, then yes, the Red Sox would be just as screwed as the Yankees. If the salary cap was set at 200,000,000, then the Yankees could just get rid of someone like Lance Berkman and be under the limit. And then still have some money left over to replace him. (Berkman’s 2010 salary- $14,500,000, team salary- $206,333,389. 206,333,389-14,500,000=$191,833,389 total salary) I don’t think it would be as catastrophic as everyone thinks it would be, it just depends on what the cap was set at.

I have a baseball signed by Rich Murray, two guys from the Braves. and one from the Orioles. How much would that baseball go for?
I also have a baseball signed by Barry Bonds. It’s quite old nd looks worn down or used in a game.
Also have a baseball card signed by Barry Bonds from 1993. How much would those two things sell for?
The BB not as much as you’d hope since he’s highly suspected to have been using steroids. as for the others…the more recognizable the name, the more money. also they are all on different teams…people from different teams on one ball is cool and all, but not worth as much as if they were all on one team especially during the same season and even more especially during that season they won the world series.
i’d take it into a sports memorabilia store to get them appraised.

I am 24 and have never played baseball. I have played similar form of game, cricket, for all my life. I have played 4 years for my college cricket team, two years as captain. I am starting to love baseball these days. I just wanna know how can start from ground level in baseball for my age? I am very desperate to play this wonderful game. I believe i have the talent to do so. Suggestions much needed.
coming from an experienced ball player….you really need to watch the games and understand how the game is played….know all the rules and regulations and def. practice! if i were you i would start going to the batting cages every single day! i would get some friends together that know the game well and have them teach you…i would buy all my baseball equiptment including batting gloves, mitts, bats, balls….if you have a local high school team nearby practice with them….i would start low level adult slow pitch softball and get a feel for the game, then work your way up to adult fast pitch baseball, then possibly semi pro, then if your good enough maybe even pro! all you need to do is PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! oh and choose what kindof player you want to be if you know names like Albert Pujols,Derek Jeter,Alex Rodriguez,Manny Ramirez,Torii Hunter,Chase Utley they all have set positions on the field in wich they play set your mind to being the best player on the field and in a matter of years you could be good enough!

i am looking to get old baseball cards, some that date back to the early 1900′s. is there any packs that actually have old baseball cards in them? i hear topps is putting all kinds of crazy stuff in there packs of like allen and ginter, i have been buying those latley. so please tell me what packs i can buy to get realy old baseball cards in them.
You’re better off finding a reputable dealer and buying individual cards than trying to get old cards in Topps packs. It’s like playing the lottery-odds are you’ll never get a card you want. Some reputable dealers are Kevin Savage, Kit Young, 707 Sportscards, Larry Fritsch-Google any of them. Ebay is an option, but beware and bid carefully. Get a Price guide like Tuff Stuff or Becket and learn about conditions and pricing, and learn how to bargain.

I’ve seen football games where people have a sac-o-meter. Do baseball fans keep a strikeout meter and adjust it with every strike out for the home team?! I’m considering doing this for a Professional fast pitch softball team’s home games!
Sometimes fans will make giant signs and hang them over the edge of a railing. They have a "K" of them showing how mnay strikeouts the pitcher has gotten (that is the home field pitcher’s strikeouts).

You know how in baseball a player might think hes safe or out or the ball was too high, low, outside, inside and in the dirt and was still called a strike? How long have they been arguing calls with umpires? When did this start?
and fights between players and umpires?
whats the oldest one ever?
Players and managers have most likely been arguing calls with umpires since the very beginning.
