Do any baseball fans keep a strikeout meter visible during the game?

July 5th, 2010 Posted in Baseball | 4 Comments »

I’ve seen football games where people have a sac-o-meter. Do baseball fans keep a strikeout meter and adjust it with every strike out for the home team?! I’m considering doing this for a Professional fast pitch softball team’s home games!

Sometimes fans will make giant signs and hang them over the edge of a railing. They have a "K" of them showing how mnay strikeouts the pitcher has gotten (that is the home field pitcher’s strikeouts).

When did baseball players and managers start arguing calls with umpires?

May 31st, 2010 Posted in Baseball | 3 Comments »

You know how in baseball a player might think hes safe or out or the ball was too high, low, outside, inside and in the dirt and was still called a strike? How long have they been arguing calls with umpires? When did this start?
and fights between players and umpires?
whats the oldest one ever?

Players and managers have most likely been arguing calls with umpires since the very beginning.

How come the sound of the baseball getting smacked sounds different?

April 28th, 2010 Posted in Baseball | 5 Comments »

So when baseball players in majors make contact with baseball, the sound is different when high schoolers, college, or even spring training majors hit the ball. Why is that? Both of their bats are made of medal right?

Same reason a slap sounds different from a punch.

Major leaguers hit the ball squarely and with more power. High schoolers hit the ball off-center and with relatively less power.

Also, major leaguers tend to have expensive bats made out of expensive woods, which affects the acoustics somewhat.

Who can we wright to to protest having baseball season start on Easter?

April 10th, 2010 Posted in Baseball | 6 Comments »

OK,I know there is the "separation of Church and State" but baseball is not run by the US government. Easter is the most sacred Christian holiday, and the US is a predominately Christian country. Why does baseball season have to start on this holiest of days? Who can write to to object? Can’t anyone start a petition?

Who is in charge of Deciding when baseball season starts, anyway?

The Wright brothers I guess…?

How do I start a summer baseball camp?

March 29th, 2010 Posted in Baseball | 3 Comments »

My friend and I are experienced baseball players graduating college in May. We would love to get into coaching baseball and believe starting a summer baseball camp in our hometown of Weymouth, MA would be a great start. The only problem is we do not know the proper procedure to do so. What steps should we take in order to plan our camp? Are there any legal issues we should know about? Any advice would be great.

More power to you. I was wanting to do the same thing. I just don’t have the bread because the liability insurance is a killer.
Addendum: Rock Firestorm is right on. I gave him a thumbs up. However, I DID NOT give Jcc the thumbs down. That’s in poor taste and uncalled for, imho.

How did Baseball go from the national past time to the most boring professional sport in America?

March 26th, 2010 Posted in Baseball | 10 Comments »

Growing up baseball was the sport. It was America’s past time. Now I call it sports purgatory because it is the most boring time of all the four major sports in America. I am just glad that the World Cup is on this summer.

What happened? How did baseball fall? Was it steroids? The unions? Greedy owners? Unnecessary expansion? All the strikes? ESPN SportsCenter’s emphasis on highlights as opposed to the story of a baseball game? Price of tickets?

Here’s an analytical perspective. Baseball was THE SPORT of the Radio Age. Young Kids and their sports obsessed fathers sitting by a Radio listening to announcers describe "Towering balls hit by (Insert Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, etc. here) that could reach the moon" They’d sit there and even keep an at home scorecard. Everything was described BIG. Curveballs went from head to toe. Home Runs were 400 foot blasts. All these descriptions filled a lot of space.

To this day some folks listen to radio broadcasts of Baseball instead of watching the TV Broadcasts. I watched the Yankee games with the sound off and turned the radio on until Michael Kay went to TV. Now I actually listen to the TV’s sound.

Then came TV. And we got to see that Pitchers spend a lot of time scratching themselves between pitches. Curveballs don’t go head to toe. Oh yeah and 400 ft. is from here to where I parked my car.

Then came the Highlight reel. This actually helped baseball for a while.

Then came the digital age. Games, PC’s (Or Macs), etc. Things started getting faster. Basball didn’t. (And no help from the Human rain delay Steve Trachsel mind you.) Football, Basketball, and Hockey (All very condusive to TV) get faster. Video Games of those sports rival the pace of the real games. Baseball’s games. Well, to this day only one company has gotten a Baseball video game right. Acclaim’s All Star Baseball (Now out of business no longer making that game because all their other games stunk.)

Baseball is sort of an Athletic Chess. It’s just a slower game. They’ve tried to incease Home Run output in hopes of increasing interest. However, I think they failed. For years, Baseball was the US’s answer to Soccer. Our slow defensive game with a 3-2 score. The anticipation for the one big blow. The Home Run to ice the game had us captivated. The same way the rest of the world waits for that moment the announcer yells GOOOAAAALLLLLL!!!!!!! But, Home Runs happen all the time now.

So now Baseball to the younger generation is a slow game with great highlight reels. Watching it for them is difficult. Some guy scratches himself a lot while the announcer tells you how great his record is when pitching in day games on the equinox if he’s at least more then 450 nautical miles North by Northwest of Fiji.

All that said. I do love Baseball. So much.

Why does a baseball pitcher start on a mound higher than the batters box?

March 20th, 2010 Posted in Baseball | 4 Comments »

Fast pitch softball pitchers start on a level plane from the batter. Why does a baseball pitcher have to be higher?

A higher mound gives the pitcher an advantage. After the 60s era of the pitcher they actually lowered the mound to reduce the edge pitchers had. In the late 90s there was serious consideration to raising the mound some more.

What the higher mound does is it adds a slight amount of velocity as you can use the mound to add momentum to your throw. It also adds a sharper angle to your pitches as well as giving you more room for specialty pitches.

The reason you don’t see it in softball is that softball is meant to be a game of hitting. Since the pitcher is throwing underhand they gain nothing in velocity from a raised mound. Softballs are easier to hit but harder to hit farther. So again the edge for the pitcher is unecessary. Having a level mound also reduces risk of injury. So for most people who play softball this is a concern.

What are the rules for dart baseball for the special baseball dartboard?

March 14th, 2010 Posted in Baseball | 1 Comment »

What are the rules to the game when using the baseball diamond that comes on the back of certain dartboards? One thing I dont understand is the very middle where there are 2 H’s and a red dot.

the game is called "Dartball" & is traditionally played in a league or similar surrounding. Each team has nine players who "bat" in turn w their team until three outs have been posted, & then the opposing team bats in the same manner

Everything marked on the board is handled by regular baseball rules. Unmarked areas are counted as bals fouled off w a strike assigned wken the batter has les than two strikes.

It is fully acceptable to to heckle "batters" as they prepare tp throw, just like in baseball.

Fpr league play there are three games played to establish best two out of three/ Obviously the game could also be okayed w just two players, one for each team.

Play Ball !!
