What supplements would you recommend for reducing scars?

March 26th, 2011 Posted in Supplements | 3 Comments »

My horse had a bad cut on his lip, and I want to try to reduce the scar. I know about the supplements that they advertise in the horse magazines. How well does that actually work? Is there any other things that you could recommend me to reduce the visibility of the scar?

I’m not sure about a scar but this is worth a try. I use Corona, your can find it at most tack stores. It’s in a yellow tube with a red lid. It workd great on bites and kicks and makes hair grow like crazy! Hope this helps! :)

What nutritional supplements should my child take to grow taller?

December 11th, 2010 Posted in Supplements | 2 Comments »

She’s twelve.
And I’m, a bad parent for failing to learn about nutritional supplements earlier!
Do Flintstones Vitamins work well for height growth? That’s all we’re concerned about, height growth!
And what the heck are fish oil supplements that Kelly Ripa keeps talking about?
Please help! I’ll die in shame if my child will forever be shorter than everyone else because I was a bad parent.

Good overall nutrition is the best bet, not vitamin supplements. Follow the food pyramid guide for numbers of servings of fruits, vegetables, whole grain, meats, fats, etc.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_guide_pyramid

or better yet, see a pediatrician.

There’s nothing shameful, nor is one a bad parent, if a child is shorter than other children. It’s mostly genetics. Your self-debasing attitude surprises me. You need to be teaching your child self-confidence, preferably by example, as well as feeding her healthy foods.

What vitamins and supplements can help you to combat fatigue and feel more energetic?

December 1st, 2010 Posted in Supplements | 5 Comments »

I’ve taken B12 but still feel a bit lethargic at the moment. What other vitamins or supplements can help you to feel more energetic?
Mister – I’m a competitive dancer and routinely get at least 2 hours of exercise a day when I’m well.

I’m an incredibly healthy eater, and am currently slightly underweight. I rarely consume sugar. I do have caffeine, but I try to not overdo it.

My vitamin B12 oral spray tastes very nice and i use it twice a day for autoimmune pernicious anaemia. Far better to take B12 sublingually and this method been proven to be as effective as B12 injections in clinical trials…..the final conclusion in fact was that sublingual may be superior to injections…i second that opinion! :) >>> http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9694707

Vitamins and minerals that can cause fatigue if low or deficient – iron, magnesium, B12 and folic acid.

What supplements should I give to a horse being shipped a long distance?

June 16th, 2010 Posted in Supplements | 3 Comments »

The horse, which is recovering from neglect and underfeeding, will be shipped about 600 miles. Are there medications/supplements that will boost its immune system and prevent shipping fever?

The B vitamins are important to the functions of the body involved in stress responses, so you could discuss this with your vet before the trip.
The best diet to deal with stress is 24/7 access to good quality grass hay, and hopefully not something he hasn’t already adapted to for at least three weeks prior to travel. No soluble sugar feeds like cereal grains should be fed. Digestible fiber sources like beet pulp are fine, or pelleted feed like equine senior by Purina are excellent to feed along with the hay. Whatever feeds/supplements you decide to go with, be sure to allow ample time for your horse to adapt to any dietary changes prior to travel.

Is it dangerous to take nutritional supplements with prescription drugs? What would you like to ask?

June 4th, 2010 Posted in Supplements | 1 Comment »

Is anyone taking prescription ibuprofen with nutritional supplements such as SAMe, magnesium, or 5-HTP? Is it safe to do that? I also have white willow bark. Should I take that instead of the prescription ibuprofen and thereby, restrict my intake to only nutritional supplements.

Well ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory medication and the rest seem to be ‘natural’ forms of anti-depressants and anti-inflammatory supplements. What is your intended goal? If you were prescribed something by a doctor I would continue to take that. Do not take the supplements in conjunction with or in place of the prescription your were given.

What protein supplements taste the least disgusting?

May 8th, 2010 Posted in Supplements | 2 Comments »

In my two years of vegetarianism, I haven’t really put much effort into taking any sort of protein supplements, mostly because they all seem to taste like ass. I unusually just stick to lentils, beans, quinoa, and chickpeas ect. However, I’m trying to eat properly, and I’m looking to get more protein into my diet so its more balanced, (preferably in a low cal form) so I’m wondering, does anyone have any high protein suggestions that don’t taste foul, are low cal, and are available in Australia?

http://www.plantfusion.us/
is a relatively new one – non-soy protein blend. And holy cow it tastes ***good***!! (As in it doesn’t even need fruit or something else to mask the flavor). I would think it could be shipped to Australia – though I don’t know much about shopping from Australia, so can’t say for sure.
