What supplements should I give to a horse being shipped a long distance?

June 16th, 2010 Posted in Supplements | 3 Comments »

The horse, which is recovering from neglect and underfeeding, will be shipped about 600 miles. Are there medications/supplements that will boost its immune system and prevent shipping fever?

The B vitamins are important to the functions of the body involved in stress responses, so you could discuss this with your vet before the trip.
The best diet to deal with stress is 24/7 access to good quality grass hay, and hopefully not something he hasn’t already adapted to for at least three weeks prior to travel. No soluble sugar feeds like cereal grains should be fed. Digestible fiber sources like beet pulp are fine, or pelleted feed like equine senior by Purina are excellent to feed along with the hay. Whatever feeds/supplements you decide to go with, be sure to allow ample time for your horse to adapt to any dietary changes prior to travel.

Is it dangerous to take nutritional supplements with prescription drugs? What would you like to ask?

June 4th, 2010 Posted in Supplements | 1 Comment »

Is anyone taking prescription ibuprofen with nutritional supplements such as SAMe, magnesium, or 5-HTP? Is it safe to do that? I also have white willow bark. Should I take that instead of the prescription ibuprofen and thereby, restrict my intake to only nutritional supplements.

Well ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory medication and the rest seem to be ‘natural’ forms of anti-depressants and anti-inflammatory supplements. What is your intended goal? If you were prescribed something by a doctor I would continue to take that. Do not take the supplements in conjunction with or in place of the prescription your were given.

What protein supplements taste the least disgusting?

May 8th, 2010 Posted in Supplements | 2 Comments »

In my two years of vegetarianism, I haven’t really put much effort into taking any sort of protein supplements, mostly because they all seem to taste like ass. I unusually just stick to lentils, beans, quinoa, and chickpeas ect. However, I’m trying to eat properly, and I’m looking to get more protein into my diet so its more balanced, (preferably in a low cal form) so I’m wondering, does anyone have any high protein suggestions that don’t taste foul, are low cal, and are available in Australia?

is a relatively new one – non-soy protein blend. And holy cow it tastes ***good***!! (As in it doesn’t even need fruit or something else to mask the flavor). I would think it could be shipped to Australia – though I don’t know much about shopping from Australia, so can’t say for sure.

What supplements can help the immune system get stronger after cancer treatment?

April 22nd, 2010 Posted in Supplements | 3 Comments »

My friend recently had all the lymph nodes removed from the right side of his neck and shoulder after 3 months of very aggressive cancer treatment. His immune system is so weak his body can’t seem to heal the wounds. What can he do to help his immune system get stronger, any advice on supplements etc would be SO helpful! Thank you!

This question REALLY needs to be posed to your doctor. While yahoo answers people are eager to help, and there may be some doctors in the house, you should not take medical advice from strangers on the internet.

That being said, look into eating more wholesome and nutritious foods in addition to whatever supplements your doctors suggest. I wish you all the best.

I am starting a gym soon, I weigh 230lbs 6’4". I do have some fat but just toning up willl get rid of it but im looking for really good turn out and soon. I am a freshmen in college so I cant spend alot on supplements but give me suggestions anyways. Thanks!

Well it really depends on your diet, sleep and also of course workout regimen.

I would recommend you to do the workout regimen which I am doing:

I eat around 3500-4000 calories

I always train only two muscle groups which go together. Here is my regimen
Monday – Biceps and Back,

Wednesday – Triceps, Shoulders and Chest

Friday – Legs and Abs

Remember it is also important that you take Portein(around 1g per pound) supplement which works as food for your body together with supplement which increase Nitric Oxide and HGH levels in your body.

You can check my bodybuilding journey in my website. I will provide link to it in the "source" field.

Best wishes and Take care!

What type of dietary supplements is a person prescribed after lap band surgery?

March 23rd, 2010 Posted in Supplements | 1 Comment »

I am doing a research project about Lap Band surgery and I am having trouble finding supplements. My teacher said there are a lot that you need to take, but I’m really only finding multivitamin, calcium and iron supplements.

I’m having lap band surgery in a couple weeks. My nutritionist said I need to have ~70 grams of protein and take a chewable mutli-vitamin everyday. I purchased meal replacement protein powder from Unjury.com (came highly suggested) and will be buying their new chewable daily supplement when it become available soon.

What Supplements Do You Not Get From Fruit And Other Healthy Foods?

March 8th, 2010 Posted in Supplements | 1 Comment »

Might sound strange but are there supplements we should be taking in form of tablets, capsules or liquid form that we do not get from food? Or maybe it can be found in food but these foods are only found at the other side of the world?

Saw something called Ginkgo Biloba and another supplements called q10 enzyme and to be honest they both do not sound as if they can be found in foods?

So am guessing we should be buying these and taking them?

supplements are just that, supplemental. they add to your nutrition. Co-enzyme Q10 is something your body makes, it’s just that as you age, less is produced, so when you are in your fourties, Q10 is something to consider taking.
Gingko Biloba, has antioxidants, they clean your blood, they do not add to nutrition. If you eat a balanced diet and avoid processed food, you get all the nutrition you need. Just remember that as you age, there are supplements that can improve your health and well being, because your body begins to fail at making adequate amounts.
Things you can research, start with Dr Louis Ignarro and his book NO More Heart Disease. Look into DHEA supplements, and also Co-Enzyme Q 10, these are all supplements that help in the aging process, not necessarily nutritional process.
